Please join us in congratulating Mr. Steve Zilko (lovingly known as Mr. Snuffy), Propel Braddock Hills Lead Custodian. Mr. Zilko has been with Propel Schools since 2006, where he started at Propel Homestead. We are thrilled to share that Mr. Zilko has won the Scott E. Folmer Staff (STEPP) Award, an award presented by the Local Task Force of Allegheny County to a school staff member who fosters and supports the education of students receiving special education services and strives to help them make the best of their abilities by establishing high expectations and recognizing that all students can learn.
Director of Student Services, Dr. Mandi Davis-Skerbetz, nominated Mr. Zilko because he goes above and beyond every day for the students at Propel Braddock Hills, especially those with special needs. In Mr. Zilko’s own words, “It’s all about the kids.”
Specifically, he has developed a special relationship with a student named RJ. RJ has significant smell and taste sensory needs, and the cafeteria can be an overwhelming environment for RJ during lunch. Mr. Zilko has helped RJ during lunch time by offering him alternative activities and environments. In addition, Mr. Zilko began watching Spongebob Squarepants, RJ’s favorite cartoon, so that the two of them would have something to talk about.
RJ refers to Mr. Zilko as his best friend.
On May 1, RJ presented the award to Mr. Zilko at the Awards Dinner at Cornell High School, and said a few words including that Mr. Zilko was very handsome! There was not a dry eye in the place. Thank you and congratulations to Mr. Zilko for going above and beyond, inspiring us all to follow your lead and make a difference.
